A solitary machine drives across the sun-drenched soil of the American West. A faint trail of dust lifts into the air as it moves along, scanning the landscape for signs of cognition. It's looking for a survivor to a human plague. It's looking for someone who can still think, someone whose mind was not wiped out by the disease. There are only a handful of places where a survivor might be. This machine, a sentinel, passes through the afflicted, looking for a spark. Looking for a light in the mental darkness at the dusk of mankind. But finding a survivor will only be one part of the journey.

Archon of the Covenant eBook David Hanrahan Mike Hester

This is a breakthrough debut novel for Hanrahan! I picked this up on a lark and couldn't put it down until finished (we're talking up all night and cancelling meetings the next morning).

The plot mixes elements of popular (nearly overplayed) contemporary themes and yet offers something new and is easily consumed thanks to a cast of unexpectedly relatable and well-developed characters, we're talking Starwars worthy droids and self-sacrificing predatory mammals.

David mixes thoughtful philosophy with well researched scientific, logic-based problem solving and touches of America's Wild Western history set in a beautiful Southwest landscape, all well carried by edge-of-your-seat narrative that has you hooked to the end.

Well done and definitely recommended. I hope that he writes a follow-up to this one!

Archon of the Covenant eBook David Hanrahan Mike Hester Reviews

In the stead of Cormac McCarthy, readers are entertained by a narrative detailing what has devolved in the southern Arizona landscape after humankind has finally destroyed everything but their finest achievements.
excellent
Author asked to add "spoiler alert" on top of this review so here it is.
OK. How should I start?
The book didn't meet my expectations.
There are numerous reasons for it which I intend to slowly describe below.
What is this book about.
There is a plague on earth which disables humans brains higher functions. Basically all humans turned into animals (those disabled humans are called revins).
And there is sentinel - sentient (or at least artificially intelligent) machine build for searching for any survivors.
Looked promising enough to interested me.
The story was a bit too long but could be interesting.

So what is wrong with the book. Be aware that reading it could spoil the book.
From the other hand maybe read it instead of wasting time on reading whole book.
The first part (about 30%) was very wearisome. The sentinel was wandering here and there meeting some obstacles etc. and nothing really happens. This part could be much shorter.
Violence.
Nearly every revin that is described is seriously injured. Multifractured legs, missing body parts, dripping blood all over - every human or animal would surely quickly die from such injuries or inflicted infections.
There are many descriptions of body parts being torn from its socket etc. - it serve no purpose and is really not necessary.
Logic.
The sentinel is programmed to search any survivors. It encounters hospital full of broken syringes but is not interesting in testing them. When it encounters Bio3 complex it finds four broken syringes and immediately tests them. Why? It had no way of knowing that those syringes may be important. Reader can knew it. But not sentinel. It should rather test syringes in hospital - it is much more probable that cure was created in hospital.
If sentinel knew that Bio3 may such important it should go straight to it, not wandering for a year somewhere else.
There is russian jammer in one of the cities. Why is it there? Why is it russian? Did they attack?
We are offered no explanation - just convenient (for the plot) russian jammer in the center of american city.
Revins are described as very violent creatures - killing immediately every normal human. Yet the one healthy girl is dragged from Bio3 to the city. It took few days for sentinel to travels this way (on wheels!). So those revins are immediately killing everyone expect this one girl which is dragged for few days or even weeks? and then kept imprisoned for some more days (or even weeks) as a food.
When sentinel recovers the girl there are hordes (hundreds of thousands) of revins pursuing them. For days. Hundreds of thousands? Those badly injured revins pursuing on foot machine which is traveling on wheels???? Not eating anything by the way (because what is there to eat for such amount of creatures in constant move).
Sentinel uses solar power. Each evening it is hibernating with low reserves of power, and in morning it is recharging. What programmers programmed it? If it is loading its batteries so quickly shouldn't it hibernate with full energy levels? That way it could react during night or be able to move in any moment. Yet it depletes its power reserves and need recharging in the morning. (very convenient for the story of course).
Returning to Bio3. It was isolated facility. When plague happened scientist made vaccine and send for testing to Bio3. It is described that vaccine was sterilized etc. before entering Bio3 through the airlocks. Habitants vaccinates themselves and need to test if it really works. Testing need 90 days spend outside. So one of them just go outside for 90 days. There are revins outside. They want to kill him. And finally they kill him much earlier.
Don't you see anything wrong? Bio3 have airlocks. Couldn't he just hide in airlock? Or even spend all 90 days in airlock? Yes yes - another thing very out of logic but very convenient for the plot.
And the biggest one. The sentinel was wandering over the year searching for any survivors. Finally it found one girl. Sentinels missions was to deliver the girl to the space ship which will transport the girl out of Earth.
When the girl makes it to the ship there are five seats of which four are occupied by other children (and already dressed in seat-belts). Remember - sentinel was searching for hear for over a year. OK. There could be other sentinels. But all of them found and delivers children in the same moment? Rather not. so were those children seating in those seats for a year? In the book there is no indication that the rocket could know anything that the girl will come right now. From readers of view they were dressed in seat belts for who knows how long eating air and pissing on seats.

Those holes in logic could be small but are very irritating (and there are of course much more that I presented)
Technical aspects of the story aside, I really enjoyed reading this story. It moved along well and kept my interest through the entire story. It was entertaining. To me, the ending is very moving.I hope you keep writing David.
